Stipple type assessment
There are two main types: distemper stipple (water-based, easier to remove) and plastic stipple (painted over, more resistant). Identifying which one you have is essential because the removal method changes completely. We check during the visit before quoting.
Stipple removal
Distemper stipple is softened with water and removed with a scraper. Plastic stipple requires mechanical sanding or stripping agents. In both cases we protect floors and furniture before starting. The process generates waste that we collect when finished.
Smoothing and filling imperfections
After removing the stipple, the wall is left uneven with small defects. We fill every imperfection, sand the entire surface and check the result with raking light to ensure no visible relief remains. Smoothing is the most labour-intensive phase and the one that makes the difference.
Priming and preparation for painting
We apply sealing primer that unifies wall absorption and prepares the surface for paint or wallpaper. Without this coat, paint can absorb unevenly and produce stains or tone differences.
Final painting (optional)
If you wish, we paint the smoothed walls in the colour of your choice. We apply two coats of washable emulsion paint with a professional flat finish. This way we hand over the room completely finished, ready to enjoy.
Clean-up and handover
We remove plastic sheets, filler residue and sanding dust. We clean the room and hand it over ready. No trace of construction work or stipple.
Stipple was the standard finish in Spanish homes built between the 70s and 90s. Today it is considered an outdated finish that darkens rooms, collects dust and makes decorating difficult. Removing it and smoothing the walls instantly modernises any room.
The process depends on the stipple type. Distemper stipple (unpainted) is softened with water and scraped off, relatively quickly. Plastic stipple (with paint layers) is harder: it requires mechanical sanding or stripping agents. In both cases, smoothing with filler, fine sanding and priming follow. It is this subsequent work that guarantees a truly smooth finish.
Many old Cádiz flats still have original stipple from thirty or forty years ago. Removing it is one of the highest-impact visual changes you can make in a home: rooms gain brightness, spaciousness and an updated look. What you ask us most.
How much does stipple removal cost in a Cádiz flat?
It depends on the stipple type (distemper or plastic) and the square metres. Distemper stipple starts at around 12 euros per square metre and plastic at around 18 euros. For a three-bedroom flat the budget is usually between 1,500 and 3,000 euros. We give you a fixed price after the visit.
How long does it take to remove stipple from a flat?
A three-bedroom flat usually takes four to seven working days, depending on the stipple type and wall condition. Distemper stipple is quicker than plastic. We give you a specific delivery date before starting.
What is the difference between distemper and plastic stipple?
Distemper stipple was applied with water-based paint and has no plastic paint layers on top. It softens with water and is scraped off. Plastic stipple has one or more coats of emulsion paint that waterproof it and make it much harder to remove, requiring mechanical sanding.
Can I wallpaper after removing the stipple?
Yes, in fact removing the stipple and installing wallpaper is a very common combination. Once the wall is smoothed and primed, the surface is perfect for any type of wallpaper. We offer the complete service: removal, smoothing and wallpapering.
